WhistlePig The Boss Hog 3rd Edition Single Barrel Rye Whiskey 14 year oldThe name says it all. This is our biggest, most profound whiskey. For the Boss Hog in us all. Made with 100% Rye, this 3rd Edition of Boss Hog, The Independent, is a celebration of the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. Triple-barreled in New American Oak, and then spent Bourbon casks, it goes on to be the first Rye Whiskey ever finished in Hogshead barrels: 250 liter Scotch casks, some of the largest barrels in the business, which were comprehensively refitted with new American oak heads. With only 30 barrels produced at an average of 125 proof, this edition of Boss Hog is extremely rare. The result is extraordinary. A fine balance between rippling power and delicate nuance. There's nothing else like it. Nose: Oak and vanilla are predominant on the nose, with undertones of mint, caramel and baking spice. Palate: Warm and bold, with lots of spices. Very faint hints of peat and smoke. Slightly earthy.

Bertani Secco-Bertani Original Vintage Edition 2012Dark ruby core, red to platinum rim. Bouquet of plum, cocoa powder, cherry cordial. Dried aromatic herbs. Sour cherry palate, black tea and cherry pit. Dusty tannin profile with mid-palate grip and a generous coffee bean finish. Alcohol and acid are moderate and balanced. Good concentration. Pure and linear. Lovely old-vine complexity though it seems youthful at this point. Dry, well-balanced with a pleasing hint of freshness in its lingering finish. Secco-Bertani has been in continuous production for over 150 years and is rightly extolled as the "grandfather" of Veronese wines. Secco-Bertani "Vintage Edition" is our tribute to the past as a way of enriching the present. It is an opportunity to rediscover a time period by taking a leap back to the past. Secco-Bertani created the Verona style of wine-making, well before Amarone and Ripasso, by using the best technology and the best grapes available at the time. That is why Bertani is the only company that can convincingly create a Vintage Edition by drawing inspiration from its own tradition.

Neudorf Vineyards Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2014Without wishing to enter into a neighbourhood debate, we do aim to create Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of maturity. Playing to our regional dfference of cool, ripe fruit and oral characters, supported with fine acidity, we work with a touch of neutral oak and lees complexity to get beyond the land of overwhelming fruit to a place where adults live. The Neudorf house style con nues with the 2014 vintage - dry, but luscious with textural interest and the ability to age. A pastiche of fruits; guava, feijoas, nectarines lifted by Asian notes of lemongrass and kaffir lime against a background of warm crusty bread. Subtle oak handling fills out the palate creating a wine of elegance, intensity and verve. It may be dry but the palate is plump and flows easily. It also ages well, a characteristic not always understood by a market which continues to see Sauvignon as an antipodean version of Beaujolais nouveau. Low cropping fruit from Maggie's Block was fermented in older barrels for added richness, texture and complexity. Living in Nelson, I could say we drink it with those first raw scallops, fresh from the dredge, awash with sea water. But quite simply it is the very best wine with fish and chips, vegetarian foods, and a setting sun.
