Huerta De Albala Barbazul 2012
|Brand||Huerta De Albala|
Wine SpectatorThis lively red shows expressive flavors of cherry, red plum, bramble, baking spices and vanilla. Generous, with good density and juicy acidity, this is modern in structure and distinctive in character. Drink now through 2018. 1,500 cases made.
Wine AdvocateThe 2012 Barbazul is the high-volume wine here, with some 400,000 bottles produced in this vintage. It's a blend of mostly Syrah with 15% Merlot, 10% Tintilla de Rota and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from 13-year-old vineyards on albariza, clay and silica soils that is aged for six months in third-use barriques. I found the 2012 riper than the 2013, with some red and black fruit aromas, spices and a medium-bodied palate with tannins ending slightly dry.
Wine EnthusiastAromas of black-olive juice, animal hide and seashell fail to offer much fruit, even with swirling. A tough palate shows no clear point of entry, while herbal black-fruit flavors draw in rather than expand on the finish. This is a Syrah-led blend with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano, aka Tintilla de Rota. It hails from Cádiz.
