WhistlePig Old World Series Madeira Finish Straight Rye Whiskey 12 year old
We at WhistlePig firmly believe that RYE holds the greatest potential of all distilling grains. We constantly strive to realize that potential and craft the finest whiskeys possible. Fueled by this spirit and unwavering commitment to superior liquid, we present The Old World Series: Madeira Finish, the first American Rye aged in Madeira, and the second release in a new series of whiskeys.
In the fall of 2012, Master Distiller Dave Pickerell began a unique experiment. After studying the time honored techniques of the Old World - particularly single malt Scotch whiskies - Dave and the WhistlePig team finished batches of 12-year-old Rye with premium Madeira casks. Produced since the 17th century on the Portuguese island of Madeira, this highly unique winemaking process includes oxidizing the wine at elevated temperatures for extended periods, replicating the primitive conditions of shipping the wine to the New World through the warm tropics. However, two blights in the 1900s eradicated more than 75% of the vines, making Madeira difficult to cultivate and procure today.
The rich caramel, fruit, and pepper notes of Madeira combine with Rye's bold, spicy attributes yielding an elegant ultra-premium straight rye, distinctly American, but hearkening to its stately Old World roots.
Wine EnthusiastWhy aren't more spirits aged in former Madeira casks? This bold, flavorful bottling is dark amber in the glass, featuring delicious gingerbread and spice cake notes, leading into honey, caramel and sherry, and finishing long with juicy orange plus clove, cinnamon and cayenne heat. With a little water to tame and soften that alcohol fire, it's delicious as a sipping whiskey. Made with 12-year-old whiskey distilled in Indiana, then aged and bottled in Vermont.
